Dealing with resistance

The idea that "You can't help someone until they want to help themselves" is a commonly held view that is not entirely accurate. The majority of successful treatment clients did not want to be there when they began treatment.

"I don't have a problem"

The entire first module of RehabWorks is dedicated to explaining exactly what it means to be diagnosed with a substance use disorder, "problem," roots out some of the most common forms of denial and misinformation that lead to power struggles about what it means to have a "problem."

"I'm not as bad as everybody else here"

One of the most common things families hear from the loved one who is trying to convince them they don't need to be there is the argument that they're not as bad as everybody else there. RehabWorks gives you everything you need for knowing how to respond if your loved one uses this as an excuse to leave treatment.

"I'm doing fine now. I don't need all this treatment"

Learn how to measure treatment progress and the importance of completing the entire treatment process. RehabWorks uses the Stages Of Change Model as tool for identifying where your loved one is in their treatment process and for making sure there are no cracks in the foundation before they discharge.

The importance of outpatient treatment

Often overlooked is how critical the outpatient phase of care is with regard to the entire treatment process. This video clip provides some insight into the fact that in some cases, IOP treatment might be viewed as actually harder than residential treatment.

Discharge does not mean treatment's over!

One of the biggest reasons for treatment failure is premature withdrawal from the treatment process. In RehabWorks families learn about the importance of following through with the entire continuum of care, regardless of whether they start out at the residential, PHP, or IOP level of care.
