Treatment Success Begins With the Family

Addressing a substance use issue with a loved one is never easy. Whether it’s your son, daughter, spouse, or parent, families often feel lost when it comes to knowing how to help.

The RehabWorks Family Support Program bridges the gap between the client, the family, and the treatment team — giving families the knowledge, structure, and confidence they need to truly support recovery.

Does Rehab Really Work?

"Failed treatment"

A family's worst nightmare is going through the pain and chaos of dealing with a problem, getting the loved one into treatment, only to have it all blow up before the ink is dry on the discharge papers. Families are devastated, thousands of dollars are wasted, and the public perception of rehab becomes tainted—as in, “rehab doesn't work.”

The good news is it doesn't have to be this way. RehabWorks shows families how to take control of a situation that has been out of control, and give their loved one the best chance possible for treatment success.

The family in treatment

Treatment clients learn a lot about addiction and recovery, but if they don't like what they're hearing, they may not want to follow treatment recommendations. And if those around the client haven't learned what the client is learning, they have no idea if the client is really following recommendations or not.

This creates a gap between the client, the family and the treatment team—where important information can fall through the cracks and ultimately become one of the leading contributors to poor treatment outcomes.

Bridging the gap

The first objective of the RehabWorks Alignment Model is to simply teach families everything the clients are learning in treatment about addiction and recovery. This levels the conversation by making sure everybody's on the same page with regard to treatment planning. And that's the shortest path to improved treatment outcomes.

The road to successful rehab

For the family who has been struggling with the turmoil of dealing with a loved one's substance use problem, the obvious goal is—not just "rehab"—but SUCCESSFUL rehab. A lot of people go to rehab, but how do we make sure that rehab's going to be successful?

RehabWorks was created to guide families on this journey and give your loved one the best chance possible for treatment success.

A message from Jim Savage, LCDC

I've worked in the addiction field for a long time—like over 30 years. But I've actually been around the addiction field longer than I've been a professional in it. You see, I was one of those “early bloomers,” and my first introduction to the addiction field was when my parents put me in drug rehab when I was 17. That was the first time I learned about the disease of addiction. But I wasn't ready to hear the message, and it took me five more years to find out that what they were saying was true: It doesn't go away, it gets worse over time, and so on

So I ended up checking myself into rehab, and that began my own personal journey of recovery.

Fast forward 32 years and I'm a seasoned addiction professional who has helped thousands of young people recover from Substance Use Disorder. I've even written my own book about how to treat addiction! And despite having enjoyed a reputation for being somewhat of a maverick in the addiction field due to my creative approach using music, creative drama, and storytelling, one of the things I’m most passionate about is improving treatment outcomes and helping families avoid the heartache of a failed treatment experience. And that's why I created this course.

I ran my own outpatient treatment program for over ten years, one of the biggest things I learned from that experience was how much of an impact the family can have with regard to treatment success. And I became so committed this idea that I actually left that business and turned my attention to working specifically with families. I developed a program for families to go through WHILE their loved one was in treatment, which gave me the unique perspective of seeing what it’s like from the family’s perspective while they’re going through the treatment process.

The next step of my journey was creating RehabWorks. You could say it’s a culmination of my ENTIRE history of being around the addiction treatment industry: From knowing personally the struggle of overcoming an addiction, to running a treatment program and seeing what works and what doesn’t work in treatment, to finally learning from families the specific struggles and challenges they face in supporting a loved one battling a substance use disorder.

Nothing is more gratifying for me than being able to help families move towards the goal of successful recovery with their loved one. The RehabWorks platform has become an amazing way to be able to share my work with more families who can benefit from this. It's my sincere hope that you might be able to use this to turn addressing a loved one's substance issue the best thing could happen for your family.
