Frequently Asked Questions
Does my loved one have to be in treatment for me to use this program?
No. You can begin the program at any stage in your process of addressing a substance use issue with a loved one:
- Intervention: Learn what steps to take in the early stages of addressing a problem
- Treatment: Tools for providing effective support once a treatment process has begun
- Aftercare: Many families also discover the program after their loved one has completed primary treatment but are still in need of support for continuing care.
Is this program only for parents of treatment clients?
While the original Rehab Works! book was written specifically for parents, the online program was revised so that it could be used for both adolescent and adult treatment clients. It is for parents of teens, parents of adult children, spouses of treatment clients, or even adult children of parents being treated for a substance use issue.
How long does the program last?
The Family Support Program is an 8-week program. The basic plan includes two 90-minute coaching sessions per week for the first four weeks, then one 90-minute session per week for the second four weeks. Additional sessions can be scheduled as needed.
The online course includes three modules; each module takes 1-1.5 hours to complete. Most families typically complete the entire course in 1-3 weeks. The coaching sessions are used to review material, process assignments, and develop support strategies.
What is covered in the coaching sessions?
During our weekly coaching sessions we will:
- Assess and review your loved one's recovery plan
- Identify and implement elements of treatment plan support
- Identify potential cracks in the foundation for recovery
- RehabWorks online course modules: Review and apply to treatment support efforts
- Establish family recovery: From codependency to peace of mind
How does the Treatment Liaison part of the program work?
During your time in the program, Jim will coordinate with your loved one's treatment providers to:
- Review your loved one's progress
- Update providers on the work you are doing
- Help you prepare for family therapy sessions
- Inform, explain, and coordinate treatment plan objectives
What is the group coaching call?
An additional weekly group call is available to any families using the RehabWorks course. It's not required as part of the coaching program, but is an excellent resource for added support:

- Opportunity to interact with other course users
- Featured presentations for additional insight into course material
