The story behind the Recovery Wheel

Hi! My name's Jim Savage. I'm a licensed drug and alcohol counselor, and have been working in the addiction treatment filed for over thirty years. I'm also in long-term recovery, and am dedicated to finding creative ways to be an advocate for recovery—both personally as well as professionally. The material presented in this course has been the basis of a broad body of work I've created over the past thirty years—from rock musicals to treatment programs.

But before we dive into the details of this course, I'll share a quick story that will give you a little more  perspective as to how this all came about...

"Life is a circle..."

In 1988 I had already been working in the treatment field when I  suffered a relapse into my own addiction andI ended up back in drug treatment, this time as a relapsed drug drug counselor in drug rehab. It was one of the darkest periods of my life. But it was also an experience that changed my life, and I'm grateful for everything that happened during that time.

One of the most things significant that happened for me while I was in treatment was the connection I made with a counselor who provided the "alternative spirituality" activities. His name was Mike. We would play drums, dance, meditate, and go for spiritual walks in the desert where we would look for feathers, rocks, and other objects that might hold some special meaning for us.

During one of those walks Mike had us stop and look at the desert around us. He pointed to the surrounding landscape, and as if he was laying out one of the deepest mysteries of the universe, he gazed off in the distance and slowly uttered: "Life is a circle. Everything happens in circles."

I had no idea what he meant by that, but it sure sounded deep.

Today, I do understand what he meant by that statement. As a matter of fact, I really understand it, as it's been the basis of my work for the past 35 years. It's the basic premise of the Native American Medicine Wheel, which teaches that life is a continuous process of growth and change. What I've done with The Recovery Wheel is relate this premise specifically to recovery and show how this is part of the bigger picture of personal growth and transformation in general.

Life is indeed a circle. My purpose for creating The Recovery Wheel is to share with you this valuable insight and show you how you can apply this in your own journey of personal transformation.

Does Rehab Really Work?

"Failed treatment"

A family's worst nightmare is going through the pain and chaos of dealing with a problem, getting the loved one into treatment, only to have it all blow up before the ink is dry on the discharge papers. Families are devastated, thousands of dollars are wasted, and the public perception of rehab becomes tainted—as in, “rehab doesn't work.”

The good news is it doesn't have to be this way. RehabWorks shows families how to take control of a situation that has been out of control, and give their loved one the best chance possible for treatment success.

What you'll learn:

THE MEDICINE WHEEL

As The Recovery Wheel is based on the Native American Medicine Wheel, the first thing we cover are the basics of how this is used as a symbol for teaching about Life.

  • The Path Of Life: "On or off the Path?"
  • The cyclical nature of Life
  • Death and rebirth
  • Life is a continuous process of growth and change

PSYCHOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT

The unique feature of the Recovery Wheel presentation is the application of the Medicine Wheel teachings to personal growth and psychological development.

  • Transition from childhood to adulthood
  • Egocentric dependent mindset to healthy individuation
  • Rites of passage
  • Letting go of the "old self"

THE 12-STEPS

The final piece of this course is showing how the 12 Steps can be viewed from the cyclical model introduced by through the Medicine Wheel, and is frequently identified as one of the most helpful aspects of the presentation.

  • Step 1: Honest look at ourselves
  • Steps 2-3: Getting out of the center (ego-centric mindset of the child) and becoming teachable, acknowledging something greater than ourselves
  • Steps 4-9: Self examination and letting go
  • Steps 10-12: Personal renewal (spiritual awakening), ongoing process of growth and change

From course users…

"Gave me an entirely new way of looking at recovery "

"I've been struggling with sobriety for a long time and have been in and out of rehab. It's always the same old message: 'Don't do drugs. Drugs are bad.' The Recovery Wheel gave me an entirely new way of looking at recovery and actually got me excited about getting sober because I now I see how it fits in with the bigger picture of becoming the person I want to be. It changed everything for me!"

Sara

21-year-old treatment client

"Love how this course separates spirituality from religion"

"I've always had a tough time with the spiritual part of recovery and I love how this course separates spirituality from religion. It definitely opened some doors for me and has already helped me feel more spiritually connected, which is something that has definitely been missing in my recovery. Thanks Jim!"

David

Age 42, three years sober

“My daughter needed a different approach. "

"I had the benefit of learning the Recovery Wheel from Jim while my daughter was in treatment with him. It definitely changed my life, and I know it changed her life as well. She had a bad attitude about treatment and I felt like she needed a different approach, which is exactly what she got through treatment with JIm. The material in this course was a major part of what made treatment work for her."

Parent of a former treatment client

“Hands down, the best explanation of the 12 Steps I've ever heard. "

"I've been in recovery for a long time, and I've never seen anything like this before. This is hands down the best explanation of the 12 Steps I've ever heard. A fascinating way of looking at how recovery fits in with the bigger picture of psychological development and personal growth."

Gary, age 53

"More than what I expected from a "mini" course!"

While the program content is superb from a recovery education standpoint, I would like to say that I was really impressed with the materials I got with the course. More than just some quick videos, there's a beautiful eBook that provides an entirely different experience from the videos. But then to make it even better, you get an audio version of the book. It's fabulous for listening in the car. I highly recommend this course!"

Jill, parent of two adult children in recovery

BONUS MODULE!

A musical portrayal of The Recovery Wheel

Included in this mini-course is a song from The Journey, a rock musical I wrote that tells my own story of addiction and recovery. As The Recovery Wheel maps out the the addiction-recovery process, The Journey can be seen as a musical portrayal of this process.

As a token of my appreciation for picking up this mini-course, I included a song from The Journey as part of the material you'll get with this program.

Each song from The Journey addresses a specific topic related to the journey around The Recovery Wheel.

Open Your Eyes (What's Goin' On) is a song that addresses the need face ourself and confront our own denial. In this bonus module you'll see how we can use the material from The Recovery Wheel to guide us on our own journey of personal transformation.
